Strict bail conditions imposed over Christmas after man charged with police assault

There’ll be no late night Christmas celebrations with friends for a Cardiff man over the holidays, following a violent night out in Newcastle last month, which saw a female police officer end up in hospital.
In front of family and friends at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, Hayden Shane Sutton, 22, was released from custody, granted bail with strict conditions.
He was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, three counts of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and being an excluded person remaining in the vicinity of a licensed premises stemming from an incident in the early hours of November 14.
He has pleaded not guilty to all offences.
Police reports allege Sutton had punched another man in the face outside The Argyle House nightclub on Centenary Rd at around 2am, and when they went to talk to him he then suddenly lashed out.
Police allege he violently charged at officers and struggled as they tried to arrest him.
During the struggle, a 30-year-old female senior constable was allegedly elbowed causing her to fall backwards onto concrete, injuring her back, shoulder, hip and wrist.
She had to be taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
Magistrate Stephen Olischlager imposed strict bail conditions which included a curfew from 9pm until 4am, report to Belmont police station three times a week, not to enter a licensed premises or consume alcohol and drugs.
The matter has been adjourned until February 26 for hearing.
