Newcastle surfer Ryan Callinan has survived a big scare at the Billabong Tahiti Pro by surfing out of the do-or-die elimination round of the world tour event.
Callinan was the biggest name in the second round but made sure he advanced by showing tactical patience in his match-up with Brazilian Caio Ibelli and American Tyler Newton.

“It was obviously really slow and you just had to wait for them,’’ Callinan said, who produced in the second half of his heat to beat injury replacement Ibelli early Monday morning in Tahiti.
Callinan said he was looking forward to the forecast swell set to hit Tahiti in upcoming days.
“I’m excited. It’s an incredible wave. You can get the wave of your life here,” he said.
Callinan’s next heat is against American Griffin Colapinto.
