NSW footballers dominate a Junior Matildas squad named for a camp and upcoming series of matches, including four players from the Newcastle Jets Academy.

Junior Matildas coach Rae Dower has 28 players to work with at a camp on the Gold Coast being used to help acclimatise her charges ahead of the AFC under 16s women’s championships

“Newcastle has certainly batted above itself in producing Matildas over the years,’’ said Dower.

“They have a well established academy there and they are able to pull from a large area.’’

FAMILY MATTERS: To these world champions

Football NSW has 10 players in the squad, Football Queensland has five, with four each from Football Victoria and Northern NSW Football.

The Newcastle Jet Academy have four players named in Emma Bates, Kirsty Fenton, Ruby Jones and Josie Morley.

After the week long camp select players will attend a pre-tournament acclimatisation camp in Thailand ahead of the AFC championship which begins September 15.

“As we edge closer to the AFC under 16 Championship in Thailand, this camp provides another opportunity for the players to express themselves and continue our preparations in the warmth of the Gold Coast,” said Dower, who oversaw the Junior Matildas on a recent Pacific Step-Up tour which included matches played in Tonga, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands.

“We blooded six new players in the Pacific and have developed much depth in the current squad over these past 12 months.”

The Junior Matildas will take on Japan, Thailand and Bangladesh in their group of the AFC championship.

The semi-finals will be played on September 25 and the decider on September 28.

Both finalists will represent Asia at the FIFA under 17s Women’s World Cup India in 2020.
