Workmates of a Central Coast man — who tragically died in a motorbike accident in the Hunter Valley — said they were “shell shocked” by the news, taking the day off work to remember a good mate and colleague.

Derek Robertson, 59, from Mardi was killed when his motorcycle and an SUV collided in the southbound lane on Great North Rd at Bucketty at about 4.30pm on Sunday.

Both vehicles crashed down a ravine, Mr Robertson thrown from his motorbike, while the driver of the SUV was trapped.

Paramedics were winched by rescue helicopter down the ravine but despite being brought up to the roadway, Mr Robertson died a short time later.

A 44-year-old woman, from Paxton, was released from the wreckage of her SUV and escaped with relatively minor injuries. She was taken to Wyong Hospital for mandatory testing.

Mr Robertson, who was the service manager at Worthington Motorcycles at Kariong, was described as a BMW master tech, with 35 years of experience working on all leading brands.

An experienced motorcyclist, he rode every day and knew the industry and motorcycles like the back of his hand.

That’s why workmates were so shocked to hear of his death, saying he was “such a good rider”.

Worthington Motorcycles shut on Monday in respect of Mr Robertson, with staff gathering at Pie in the Sky in Cowan — a popular hangout for motorcyclist — to spend some time to remember their friend and colleague.

Tributes also flowed on social media.

“Our hearts are broken you were the kindest soul I have ever known, such a pleasure to have known you. RIP beautiful friend,” one person commented on Facebook.

“RIP you were a beautiful person, I will miss you every day. I will miss our talks, fly high,” another said.

“RIP buddy, thanks for all your knowledge and encouragement. Keep on riding mate,” one commented.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
