A Hunter couple have been charged with attempting to import more than half a kilogram of the drug MDMA into the country.

Port Stephens Hunter police district detectives swooped on a Cliftleigh house on Wednesday following a two-month investigation into the alleged importation of the drug commonly known as ecstasy.

A man, 30, and his 32-year-old partner were arrested and later charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of an imported controlled substance.

Detectives will allege just over 500 grams of an analogue of MDMA, still in crystals, was detected coming into Australia.
