Newcastle man Daniel Fing — jailed twice for serious explosive and bomb charges including one that made international headlines — is again on the wanted list after detectives allegedly discovered guns and ammunition in his girlfriend’s house.
Fing, 35, has not been seen since last week when Newcastle City detectives arrived at his girlfriend’s Lambton home to conduct a Firearms Prohibition Order (FPO).
Legislation limits police powers while conducting FPOs, and detectives were left with no choice but to allow Fing to leave the unit before police could conduct a search.
Once inside, police allegedly found a shotgun hidden under a bed, a crossbow and a replica M16 machine gun.
A second search at the Belmont North home of Fing’s father, former jailbird Trevor Fing, also allegedly uncovered a shotgun hidden in a wall cavity.
There is no suggestion Trevor Fing — who has spent several stints in prison including several years for a $1.7 million fraud but is now wheelchair-bound after losing an arm and a leg in an alleged hit-and-run crash — is involved in the possession of the shotgun.
It is the second time police have used the “Bearcat” armoured vehicle to raid Trevor Fing’s home, after they were criticised for crashing through a front fence while investigating Daniel Fing’s involvement in the discovery of a stockpile of weapons and explosives in Queensland in 2014.
Daniel Fing would later be jailed for three years over what was described in media reports as the Brisbane “bomb house”, where up to 50 litres of explosives were discovered.
Fing argued he had just wanted to make homemade fireworks with the explosives and pleaded guilty 11 charges, including manufacturing explosives without authority and weapons offences for possessing items such as a crossbow, flick knife and five “tainted” firearms.
The initial raids made international headlines following reports of crude maps drawn of places within central Sydney and Newcastle suburbs, including Sandgate.
Police quickly ruled out links to terrorism.
But it was the latest in a long line of criminal charges against Daniel Fing, who was also convicted of making a powerful homemade bomb to blow up a car belonging to a love rival in 2006.
Using the high-grade explosive TATP, Fing set the bomb underneath the car belonging to the new lover of an ex-girlfriend.
The driver was reversing the car inside Belmont McDonald’s carpark when the bomb exploded, blasting a hole in the fuel tank but allowing the man to escape before it destroyed the entire car.
Daniel Fing was jailed for four years after pleading guilty to maliciously destroying a car with intent to cause bodily harm.
Detectives have been chasing Daniel Fing, who is understood to know that he is wanted after leaving the Lambton home of his girlfriend last Thursday.
There are some concerns Daniel Fing has again travelled interstate, with his known connections in Queensland.
