Newcastle's best hairdressers revealed

We asked you who the best hairdresser in the wider Newcastle area is and the results are in. FIND OUT WHO THE WINNER IS.

From blowouts to a total mane makeover, hunting for the perfect hairdresser is no simple task.

Last week, we asked you to vote for Newcastle’s favourite hairdresser and we were overwhelmed with nominations.

After putting the vote out from Thursday to Sunday we had a trio of joint winners across the region.

The Newcastle News can now reveal the top hairdressers in Newcastle and the Hunter in 2020 as voted by our readers.

Kira Ryan who has been a hairdresser for almost 18 years started as an apprentice at Inspirations Hair Design.

After completing her apprenticeship she stayed on as a senior and now helps manage the salon with owner Helen Stuckings.

Ms Ryan said “it was an honour” to be nominated as one of the finalists.

“The clients become more like family over the years and Inspirations isn’t working for a company it’s a family.

“And that also makes it enjoyable going to work (if you can call it work) it’s more a lifestyle.”

The mother-of-two said the best part about the job was interacting with people every day.

“I love it because I’m a people person,” she said.

“You make people feel good. They leave the salon with a smile on their face,” she said.

The Maitland hairdresser said her whole “work family” equally deserved recognition.

“It’s not me who’s been nominated as a finalist but also my work family.

“I am the stylist I am today because of them, especially Helen, who I’m very grateful for.”

Hope Vella has been hairdressing since she was 16 and has worked in salons across Sydney and Newcastle.

The bright colour and blonde hair specialist said she loves “doing colour.”

The 23-year-old whose mum Michelle is the owner of the salon said it’s been a magical three years working together.

“We’re a mother-daughter team,” she said.

“My mum always wanted to be a hairdresser and when I finished my apprenticeship she got on board.”

Ms Vella said the best part of the job is making people “feel and look incredible.”

“It makes my day,” she said.

Kristie O’Brien at Nicky’s Hair Design

Kristie O’Brien has said it was her “childhood dream” to be a hairdresser and now she’s the face behind Nicky’s Hair Design.

Ms O’Brien who runs the Mayfield salon solo said she was shocked to find out she was one of the winners.

“Oh my God, I’m a bit overwhelmed,” she said.

“I’ve had the salon for 15 years and in May last year I decided to get rid of staff and do it all on my own.

“It was my best decision ever.”

The full-time working mum and mother-of-two little girls said she loves running her “amazing business” and wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I’m forever grateful for all my customers and their love and support. They make my job a dream.”
