A Lake Macquarie man who allegedly considers himself to be a “fantasy paedophile” has been accused of possessing numerous images and videos of child pornography.
According to police facts tendered to court, Nathan John Penman, 46, from Wangi Wangi, made disturbing comments in an interview about paedophilic behaviour which included that children should have a say as to whether they partake in sexual activities with adults.
He allegedly told police that when he takes methyl-amphetamines, he loses all inhibitions and accesses child porn, especially of very young children.
According to the police facts, he also likened society’s perception of paedophilic behaviour and child abuse material, to that of societies perception of homosexuality in the 1980s.
Facts also alleged how Penman felt that because he had never touched any under age person, but only role played as a paedophile, he believed he wasn’t a genuine paedophile.
Penman has been charged with use carriage service to access child abuse material, possess child abuse material using carriage service, and two counts of possess child abuse material.
Following an investigation, Lake Macquarie detectives raided his Wangi Wangi home on Thursday.
Police facts said a phone found in Penman’s bedroom allegedly contained a number of still photographs and videos containing child abuse material within the picture gallery.
Police also allegedly uncovered A4 pages on his bedside table containing multiple child abuse images in a yellow envelope, while a USB found in the DVD player in the lounge room also allegedly had a number of files containing child abuse material.
When police asked him about the images and videos, he allegedly replied “no comment”. He was then placed under arrest.
All electronic devices were seized and are being forensically examined where it’s expected there could be further charges.
In Toronto Local Court on Friday, Penman didn’t appear but his solicitor said her client needed certain medication while in custody for a severe gluten intolerance and HIV treatment.
He was refused bail, to reappear at Toronto Local Court later this month.
