A man who confronted Newcastle police officers wielding a knife — all captured on body worn video — told Newcastle Local Court he had mental health issues and had been “hearing voices”.
Mitchel Randell, 28, pleaded guilty to using an offensive weapon as he lunged towards two officers in a police vehicle at Hamilton South on June 23.
It was all played out in a shocking video which went for several minutes, as police went to investigating reports of a brawl in Fowler street.
Officers were heard saying, “get on the f**king ground, get on the ground, f**k off” to Randell as an angry mob of about 50 people came towards police.
When backup arrived, one officer is heard saying, “he came at us with a knife, I thought I was going to die”.
Mr Randell appeared via video link in court on Thursday where he asked Magistrate Sharon Crews to sentence him for the charge.
“Can you just get it over and done with today,” he impatiently said.
But Magistrate Crews told the court she wanted to order a sentencing assessment report for Mr Randell and line up fresh matters which stemmed from April which included a charge of wilful and obscene exposure.
All matters have been adjourned until next month.
