Martin Papworth: Telarah man charged with leading police on two pursuits through Raymond Terrace, Thornton, Woodberry

Telarah man Martin Papworth was arrested and charged on Sunday morning for allegedly being the driver in two pursuits across the Hunter.

A Telarah man has been accused of leading police on two high speed pursuits throughout the Hunter region.

Police allege Martin Dennis Papworth, 54, was behind the wheel of a Toyota Corolla on Friday afternoon when police stopped the vehicle on Adelaide St, Raymond Terrace.

Police briefly spoke with Papworth – who was the driver of the vehicle – before it’s alleged he then accelerated away and police gave chase.

The pursuit travelled through Raymond Terrace allegedly reaching speeds of up to 140 kilometres an hour in a 50 zone.

The vehicle stopped on Charles St, where police allege Papworth fled on foot. Despite a search, he could not be found.

Then on Sunday morning, police allege Papworth was again behind the wheel when they tried to stop a Hyundai Santa Fe for a random breath test on Raymond Terrace Rd at Chisholm.

Police allege the vehicle sped off and a second pursuit ensued travelling through Thornton and Millers Forest, allegedly reaching speeds of up to 140 kilometres an hour in an 80 zone.

The Hyundai came to a stop at a home on Waterbush Crescent, Woodberry, where Papworth and a female passenger, 42, were arrested.

Papworth was subjected to drug tests which allegedly tested positive for methylamphetamine and cannabis.

He was charged with 10 offences, including police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, police pursuit – not stop – drive speed dangerous, drive while disqualified, possess prohibited drug, driver provide false name, exceed speed over 45km/hr and goods in custody.

The female passenger was released without charge.

In Newcastle Local Court on Monday, he was refused bail for his matters to go before Magistrate John Chicken at Maitland Local Court in two days time.
