A Sydney man charged with spreading right-wing extremist ideology, including threats to shoot up a mosque online, will make an application for bail at Newcastle Local Court next month.

Heavily armed police from the tactical Operations Unit swooped on Mr Rothsey in Hamilton where they seized a phone and backpack.

After being interviewed by detectives from the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team, police located a number of concerning posts on social media.

He was then charged with use carriage service to menace, harass, offend.

Investigators found no evidence that he had the ability to carry the alleged threats out.

At Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, Mr Rothsey appeared via video link.

His solicitor objected to a six week adjournment made by the DPP and said it was rather lengthy given the matter had been with them for some time.

“It’s not a strictly indictable matter and my client is eager to have the matter moving,” she said.

She instead nominated a two week adjournment and said her client would make a bail application on the next court occasion.

Magistrate Leslie Brennan agreed it was taking a long time for the DPP to make a decision and granted the shorter adjournment date.

Rothsey’s matter has been held over until November 11 where he will make an application for bail.
