A woman has been accused of assaulting a police officer before spitting at him at a vehicle stop in Lake Macquarie.

Police stopped a Subaru Forester on Anzac Parade at Teralba at around 7.40am Tuesday morning for the purpose of a breath test.

The driver - a 30-year-old man - initially refused to undergo a drug and alcohol test.

The passenger - a 20-year-old woman - then got out of the vehicle and became verbally abusive.

After police warned her to maintain social distance, it’s alleged the woman struck the officer in the chest before she spat at him.

The driver eventually participated in a drug test and returned a positive reading for cannabis. He was arrested and taken to Toronto Police Station for secondary analysis.

A one-year-old child was also in the vehicle at the time and a child-at-risk notification has been submitted to the Department of Family and Community Services.

On Wednesday the woman was charged with two counts of assaulting police, resist or hinder police, behave in offensive manner and intimidate a police officer.

She’ll front Toronto Local Court in August.
