‘Today is the day I choose to die. Goodbye to all’ were the words a man posted to Facebook as a siege unfolded at a home near Newcastle yesterday.

Kaillin James Clancy, 30, allegedly greeted heavily armed police with a knife and shot two officers with a “paint pellet gun” at a Maryland property on Thursday morning.

He allegedly held a swarm of police at bay for almost two hours, with two women and two children inside the Warkworth St home, as his relatives watched on from behind police tape.

Mr Clancy also allegedly tried to upload a live stream to Facebook, although authorities were quick to take it down within minutes.

Negotiators took until just after 11am to talk Mr Clancy down, who surrendered and was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.

He was charged with common assault, destroy or damage property, discharge a firearm with intent to resist arrest, fire a firearm manner likely to injure persons, use unauthorised prohibited firearm, not keep firearm safely, armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and two counts of assault a police officer.

In Newcastle Local Court on Friday, Mr Clancy briefly appeared via video link as his solicitor Chris Bennett told the court the matter would need to go to the Directors of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Mr Bennett told Magistrate Stephen Olischlager his client would need to receive psychiatric assessment and treatment while in custody.

He made no application for bail, it was formally refused, for the matter to be adjourned until next month.
