Man charged after allegedly pulling knife on police

A Hamilton man who confronted two Newcastle police officers wielding a knife — all captured in a shocking video — has been sentenced to 18 months jail.

Mitchell Dean Randall, 28, pleaded guilty to using an offensive weapon as he lunged towards the officers in a police vehicle on Fowler St, as they were responding to reports of a brawl at Hamilton South on June 23.

The body worn video went on for several minutes, with officers heard screaming, “get on the f**king ground, get on the ground, f**k off” to Randall as an angry mob of about 50 people came towards police.

“He came at us with a knife, I thought I was going to die”, one officer said as backup arrived to assist.

During the arrest, a second man, approached the officers and attempted to intervene saying, “f**king hell, he’s done nothing, he hasn’t got a knife, you f**king idiot”.

Christopher Pyne, 35, ignored repeated requests to move back and became increasingly aggressive before police deployed OC spray to subdue him.

Mr Pyne was charged with affray and hinder police and was given a 10 month intensive corrections order (ICO) in July.

While Mr Randall was also keen to get his matter finalised last month, Magistrate Sharon Crews ordered a sentencing assessment report and adjourned it to line up with fresh matters which stemmed from April, including a charge of wilful and obscene exposure and entering enclosed lands.

In Newcastle Local Court last week, Magistrate Crews sentenced Mr Randall for all three charges.

He was jailed for 18 months with a non-parole period of nine months, eligible for release in March next year for using an offensive weapon.

He was given a conditional release order (CRO) for a period of 18 months for wilful and obscene exposure and convicted for entering enclosed lands, but no penalty was imposed.
