With a predicted population boom in the area, Lake Macquarie Council has approved a $5.5 million recreation facility at Cooranbong.
With the ongoing development of the North Cooranbong Residential Estate - known as Watagan Park - there becomes an increased need for infrastructure and community facilities in the area.
The local sporting hub will see the construction of a clubhouse/amenities building equiped with change rooms, store rooms, spectator seating and kiosks.
The development will include two full-sized rugby fields with a concrete cricket pitch in the centre and two concrete playing courts for netballers and basketballers.
There will also be two side-by-side cricket nets, car parking and a shared pedestrian cycleway path.
The site at Freemans Drive - known as the Cooranbong town common, which is currently owned and operated by Lake Macquarie Council as a public reserve - will facilitate public recreation, social well-being and community organisations.
Cooranbong is identified as an urban release area in the Hunter Regional Plan, which estimates an additional 70,000 dwellings will be needed in the region by 2036, of which 13,700 are in Lake Macquarie.
The public recreation area is a key infrastructure project to meet the demand of a growing population and targets set out in the plan.
