Joshua Walker Smith, 34, stands accused of using his four-wheel drive to hit and kill Ewan Sams on September 25, 2018.

The impact allegedly propelled Mr Sams into the side of a shed in the backyard of Mr Sam’s property on Edith St, Cessnock.

Mr Sams died at the scene.

The pair had been dating the same woman, and detectives will allege Smith became jealous of his love rival and murdered him.

Following an investigation which spanned almost two years, Hunter Valley detectives arrested Smith at Cessnock on Wednesday morning.

He was taken to Cessnock police station where he was interviewed and charged with murder.

Smith was also charged with three counts of ongoing supply of methylamphetamine.

He briefly faced Cessnock Local Court on Wednesday afternoon where bail was not applied for and formally refused. He will reappear on August 12.
