Detectives will await a post-mortem examination on bones found in a culvert next to an Upper Hunter road before ruling out suspicious circumstances.
A man walking his dog found the human remains about 15 metres off Gundy Rd, about 5km from Scone, on Sunday morning.
A crime scene was established and specialist officers from the operational support group attended the area on Monday to conduct a significant search for evidence.
Other than a few items gathered near the bones, nothing of significance has been found.
The bones were taken to Newcastle morgue where an autopsy in the next few days may be able to shed some light on a cause of death.
Forensic pathologists may also be able to confirm if the bones belong to a male and whether they had been in the culvert for several months or longer.
