It is understood the remains were discovered about 15 metres from the road in a culvert, which runs into a drain and passes under the road.

The bones, which are suspected to be human but will need to be confirmed by a forensic pathologist, appear to have been in the culvert for an extended period of time.

The forensic examination would also be needed to confirm the gender of the remains and whether the person had suffered injuries or fractures.

Missing persons reports are being searched as part of the investigation.

Forensic experts are expected to remain at the scene for most of Sunday before the remains will be taken away for a full autopsy.

Hunter Valley detectives are in charge of the investigation.
