Western Sydney Airport gives residents a “shoddy deal”

CHIFLEY federal Labor MP Ed Husic (pictured) has dismissed the current proposal for aircraft noise management at the proposed western Sydney airport as “a shoddy deal”.

The Environmental Impact Statement released on Thursday recommended head to head flights between 11pm and 6am and advised against a single merge point over residential areas to reduce the noise.

Mr Husic argued the surrounding suburbs, which include St Marys, were still subject to constant aircraft noise because the airport would have uncapped flights and no curfew.

“The residents around Sydney airport won’t even allow an increase of five planes per hour to their cap yet western Sydney is subject to an unlimited number of planes flying overhead,” Mr Husic said.

“It’s time to stop giving western Sydney a shoddy deal. This proposal is fundamentally unfair and shouldn’t go ahead.”

Federal Urban Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher said the government had taken the community’s concerns into consideration.

“We’ve made a number of decisions designed to respond to perfectly understandable concerns from the community about the impacts of the airport,” Mr Fletcher said.

“What’s in the draft and the final EIS are indicative, indicative only ... The final flight path modelling and development process will be a lengthy process.

“It involves a significant period for community consultation as well.”
