Pride of Australia: School co-ordinator sets benchmark

AFTER 38 years at St Agnes Catholic High School, Susan Roberts has retired on a high note and been nominated for a Pride of Australia medal.

AFTER 38 years at St Agnes Catholic High School, Susan Roberts has retired on a high note and been nominated for a Pride of Australia medal.

Ms Roberts, who organised the school’s pastoral care, curriculum, timetable, choir and Kris Kringles, retired from fulltime work at the school earlier this month.

Her contribution to the school as its technical and applied science co-ordinator for 20 years led the school to name a TAS building after her — The Roberts Building.

As camp co-ordinator, Ms Roberts organised and attended 52 school camps over the years, and at 48 of those camps she cooked 180 meals, three times a day for three days.

Ms Roberts also directed musicals, designed the school’s current uniform and helped design the new cooking room.

Ms Roberts said her time at St Agnes had been “most satisfying”.

“I have had 38 years of my life to one place and it has been the most satisfying career I could have had,” she said. “It’s a rewarding job to have. No day is ever the same. I can honestly say I have been happy walking into this school every day.

“It was a massive decision to retire. I wasn’t burnt out at all. I wanted to retire on the top of my game. I wanted to retire when I knew that I was as good as when I first came into teaching. I wanted to retire with the respect of my colleagues and the respect of my students.”
