IN ONE of their more unusual assignments, two fire crews were called on to free a young boy who had accidentally cuffed himself with handcuffs.
A mother took her son, aged about 11, to Mt Druitt Fire Station on Wednesday after the mechanism on his replica cuffs failed.
As a matter of protocol and need for equipment, the Mt Druitt crew called in a specialist crew from the 78 Ropes Crossing Fire Station who managed to cut and prise him free.
Mt Druitt Fire Station Commander Daron Lesslie said the boy was calm considering the situation he was in.
“The mechanism had failed,” Commander Lesslie said. “He’d had them on for a little while and he was quite uncomfortable.
“We called in specialist rescue from 78 Ropes Crossing Fire Station to assist while we kept the swelling down with ice packs.
“After a little cutting and prising, our champion patient was soon released from his binds.
“He was quite relieved to have them off.”
Commander Lesslie said it wasn’t the first time his fire crews had been called on to cut handcuffs.
“And it certainly won’t be the last,” he predicted.
Commander Lesslie advised anyone in a similar situation to call triple-0 and help would come to them.
The young boy’s mother joked on Facebook that her son would have a story to tell at school the following day.
