Police have concluded a vicious New Year’s Day assault, where a man was said to have been beaten by six others, never happened.

Police previously said a 52-year-old man had been attacked by the group at Feighan Oval, about 12:30am.

They had been told the men, who were not known to the victim, pushed him to the ground and assaulted him, before fleeing down John St.

Officers at the time appealed for information to help find the men, who were described as being in their late teens to early twenties.

But almost a week later, an investigation has found the culprits don’t exist.

“Following extensive inquiries, police have determined the incident did not occur,” Lake Macquarie Police said in a statement.

“Police would like to reassure the public that there is no ongoing danger in relation to this alleged incident.”
