A man has been hospitalised with horrific head cuts, a broken thumb and severe gravel rash after he was allegedly run over by his own car after it was stolen during an early morning burglary by a group of youths, who are subsequently accused of taking police on a series of chases before being arrested.

It will be alleged that the man, 54, was woken by his front door alarm about 2.30am on Tuesday before telling his wife to ring police while he went to investigate inside their Lake Macquarie home.

He then heard his Toyota Land Rover starting up and ran out the front of the Valentine home where he was allegedly confronted by a group of youths with a Mercedes, later confirmed as allegedly stolen from western Sydney, and his own car.

But after the driver of his Land Rover performed a U-turn, the man stepped onto the road in an attempt to stop it.

It will be alleged the car was driven at the man, who jumped onto the bonnet of the Land Rover before crashing onto the roadway.

He suffered two serious head wounds, a fractured thumb and severe gravel rash to his elbow, which needed surgery after he was rushed to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.

The Land Rover and Mercedes was driven away before a series of pursuits across parts of the Hunter continued on New Year’s Eve.

Hunter Valley highway patrol officers were driving along the Hunter Expressway about 1.50am on New Year’s Day after an earlier chase when they attempted to stop the Land Rover.

Police allege the car driver failed to stop and another chase began before being terminated for safety concerns.

A police helicopter continued to monitor the car, which is alleged to have reached speeds of up to 170km/h in a 100km/h zone, before it was driven through Belford and Muswellbrook.

Police said officers twice deployed road spikes and the Land Rover came to a stop on the New England Highway at Muswellbrook.

They allege some of the occupants attempted to run from the scene before six teenagers were arrested and taken to Muswellbrook police station.

Five teenagers – two boys aged 17, two girls aged 16 and a 16-year-old boy – were all charged with being carried in a conveyance without the consent of the owner. They were refused bail to face a children’s court on Wednesday.

A girl, 15, was also charged and granted conditional bail to appear at a children’s court on February 11.
