A Newcastle man has been arrested by undercover detectives following an investigation into alleged online child abuse in the Hunter.

Police will allege in court the 40-year-old believed he was speaking with the mother of a nine-year-old girl and engaged in sexually-explicit conversations about acts he wished to perform on that child.

Police will also allege in court it was officers from the Sex Crime Squad’s Child Exploitation Internet Unit who had been engaging with the man online from September last year.

Strike Force Trawler detectives arrested the man at Mayfield at about 8am on Thursday where a search warrant was conducted at his home and electronic devices were seized. They will undergo further examination.

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station and charged with use carriage service transmit/publish/promote child abuse.

The 40-year-old was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Friday.
