A father and son have been charged after allegedly targeting a wheelchair-bound woman and her carer as they left a public pool before dumping the specifically-designed car and setting it alight.
Mark Creighton, 47, and his 25-year-old son Jackson Creighton remained behind bars on remand on Wednesday after being charged over the alleged carjacking outside Maitland pool on September 12.
Creighton senior was arrested on Tuesday, almost a fortnight after Port Stephens-Hunter detectives arrested and charged his son.
Police will allege the two women, both aged in their 60s, were pushed to the ground before two men fled the scene in a silver Honda CRV.
The women - a wheelchair-bound lady and her carer - had just left the popular aquatic centre just off Les Darcy Drive at 12.45pm on September 12 when they were allegedly targeted.
The car was later found burnt out near Singleton.
Port Stephens-Hunter detectives kicked off an investigation before 25-year-old Jackson Creighton was arrested in Singleton the following day.
Creighton, of Raymond Terrace, was charged with one count each of steal from person (greater than $15,000), attempted aggravated steal from person, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and damage property by fire.
He faced Singleton Local Court on September 14 where he was not required to enter any pleas and did not apply for bail.
He was formally remanded in custody to appear in Newcastle Local Court on November 8.
Detectives then arrested his father Mark Creighton at Maitland police station on Tuesday afternoon.
The Rutherford man was charged with two counts of steal from the person value over $15000.
He faced Maitland Local Court on Wednesday where he pleaded not guilty to both charges.
A bail application was refused and he will face court again next week.
