The heavily-armed officers and robbery and serious crime squad detectives took the 31-year-old man into custody following a four-day investigation into the September 21 shooting of the couple in the Lake Macquarie suburb of Gateshead.
The detectives had taken over the investigation from Lake Macquarie investigators into the Cassia Cres incident, where a 42-year-old man suffered a bullet wound to an arm and his 32-year-old partner was shot in the leg.
Police allege the pair were shot after speaking with two people inside their home about 2.20am.
Both were treated at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
A crime scene was established and forensic experts spent most of the day at the scene gathering evidence.
A strike force was also set up as the investigation into the double shooting was launched.
It culminated in the arrest at Wallsend about 12.45pm on Monday, where Sheard was arrested and taken to Newcastle police station.
During a search of the property police located two firearms, which were seized for further forensic examination.
Sheard was later charged with shoot at with intent to murder, possess unauthorised firearm, use unauthorised firearm, and discharge firearm etc intend to cause grievous bodily harm.
Court documents state that the intent to murder charge relates to the shooting of the man while the grievous bodily harm charge Sheard shot the the woman in the upper left thigh.
The documents also stated that police will allege Sheard had used a single-barrel rifle in the attack.
Sheard briefly faced Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday where he was not required to enter any pleas and did not make a bail application.
He was formally remanded in custody to reappear on November 15.
