A Nelson Bay man was running a drug operation out of a Newcastle unit when police stormed the apartment, uncovering large quantities of ice, GBH and over $135,000 in cash.

Rohan Michael Grant, 36, had been living at the King St property for about two weeks when officers from the Hunter Region Enforcement Squad, Northern Region High Visibility Unit and Operation Utah Hunter busted in and raided the unit on the morning of May 6.

As police searched each room, they found almost 900 grams each of meth and 1-4 Butanediol and thousands in cash.

Police facts detailed numerous plastic resealable bags strewn all over the apartment, including the bedroom and the kitchen, which contained various amounts of meth, some with a purity of more than 70 per cent.

A pair of black cargo pants were found with three bundles of cash in the pockets totalling more than $11,000, as well as several ID cards with Grant’s name on them.

Officers also discovered safes inside the wardrobe with more meth and cash tucked away, a ‘black man cave bag’ above the fridge containing a freezer bag with almost 500g more ice, and a water bottle containing liquid GHB, according to police facts.

Police also seized several electronic scales, numerous empty plastic resealable bags and a heat sealing machine, all consistent with a thriving drug supply business.

In Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday Grant appeared via video link and pleaded guilty to charges of supplying a large commercial quantity of prohibited drugs, supplying prohibited drugs and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

He’ll now head to Newcastle District Court for sentencing.
