Mudgee man allegedly points rifle at crowded Denman pub

Police allege the 46-year-old grabbed a rifle, complete with a scope, from the boot of his car and pointed it at the Denman hotel where patrons were enjoying a drink.

A man has allegedly pointed a rifle at a crowded Hunter Valley pub before driving more than 60km away while nearly three times the blood alcohol limit.

The Mudgee man, 46, was arrested in Singleton about 10.10pm on Wednesday, less than an hour after he allegedly left a Denman hotel, opened his boot and grabbed the rifle, complete with a scope.

Police allege the man had been drinking in the Ogilvie St hotel before he attempted to chat to a few other patrons.

The man, a registered gun owner, allegedly then walked from the hotel, grabbed the rifle from his car and pointed it towards the pub about 9.15pm.

Police said pub management locked the doors and moved patrons into another area before the man drove off.

No shots were fired and one was injured.

Hunter Valley police arrested the man in Singleton less than an hour later and allegedly seized the unloaded gun from the Holden Captiva’s boot.

He allegedly registered a blood alcohol reading of 0.146.

He was charged with being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, intimidation, mid-range drink driving and other firearm offences.

He was refused bail to appear in Muswellbrook Local Court on Thursday.
