A manhunt is under way after a group stormed a Newcastle hotel to rob it and bashed a bystander trying to intervene, police say.

Police are now trying to track down the offenders after a 25-year-old man was rushed to hospital with a nasty head laceration.

At about 2:30am on Wednesday morning, emergency services were called to the Lemon Grove Hotel at Wallsend.

Police were told at the scene the group forced entry to the Nelson St premise before stealing keys and attempting to steal cash.

Upon attempting to leave, police say the young man intervened and was assaulted before the group fled in a dark coloured sedan.

He was treated by paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

A crime scene was established and as part of investigations into the incident, police are now appealing to anyone that may have information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
