Two men accused of the brutal shotgun murder of a petty criminal on the doorstep of a friend’s home after an alleged botched black market gun trade have denied their involvement.
Mohamad Raad and Tyrone Tuli pleaded not guilty in Newcastle Local Court this week to the murder of Tony Nugent at a Hamilton South unit on September 6, 2022.
Police allege the pair and a third man, Mohd Azlan Latham Aznan, travelled to the Fowler St residence before Raad is said to have fired the shotgun into the 57-year-old’s chest as he opened the door.
It’s further alleged Mr Nugent was part of a targeted attack after a deal in the world of illegal gun trading went awry.
Raad and Tuli also entered pleas of not guilty to a charge of supply pistol to a person unauthorised to possess it and manslaughter and will head to trial, set to be arraigned in February next year.
Latham Aznan is yet to enter pleas to the same three charges. His next court date is in January.
All three men were arrested by Strike Force Alcheringa detectives in August last year - close to a year after Mr Nugent’s death - after police raided properties in Newcastle and Sydney and seized several firearms following an 11-month investigation.
