Special education teacher Karly Rae charged with sexually assaulting child

A special education teacher in the Hunter has been accused of sexually assaulting a child. Read what happened when she appeared in court.

A Hunter teacher is facing a serious charge of sexually assaulting a child.

Special education teacher Karly Rae was arrested by the Child Abuse Squad at her Merewether home on the afternoon of October 12 following an investigation into alleged child abuse.

The 36-year-old was taken to Newcastle police station and charged with aggravated sexual intercourse with a child.

Court documents revealed the alleged incident happened between 6pm on October 4 and 12:30pm the following day where she is accused of having sex with a 15-year-old child.

It is not alleged the complainant is a special needs child.

In Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday Rae appeared in person as she was represented by solicitor James Janke.

The court heard the police still had two outstanding items remaining on the matter, with it adjourned until January next year.

Rae was granted strict bail on October 13 and ten days later her bail was varied.

Conditions imposed require the 36-year-old to report three times a week to Toronto Police Station and to be at an address approved by the court unless in the company of an approved person.

Rae must also not use or access any social media and not to be in the company of any person under the age of 16 years unless accompanied by an adult over the age of 25 years.
