A man has died after being pulled from the surf at Burwood Beach.

Emergency services were called to the Merewether beach about 2.30pm following reports a man and woman were in trouble in the water.

The woman, 25, made it to shore uninjured while the man, also aged 25, was seen by a paraglider flying above.

The paraglider landed near the man and hauled him onto a rock ledge.

Paramedics joined lifeguards and bystanders in performing CPR on the man but he could not be revived.

Newcastle City Police District attended and will prepare a report for the information of the coroner.

Inspector Jim Duffy, of NSW Ambulance, said bystanders and lifeguards were quick to act, using a defibrillator as paramedics arrived.

“The patient was in a very tricky location, and despite the best efforts of all involved, the patient sadly couldn’t be revived,’’ Insp Duffy said.

“Reports suggest a paraglider spotted the man in the water and landed on the sand, he pulled him from the water and started CPR.

“If you see someone in genuine distress, don’t hesitate to call triple-0 (000), it can be the difference between life and death.

“We encourage the public as the weather gets warmer to please swim at patrolled beaches this summer.”
