Maitland man to face Newcastle court charged with kidnapping, assaults and police pursuit

A Maitland man accused of kidnapping and viscously assaulting a woman to the point she needed surgery allegedly rammed police in a stolen Landcruiser in an attempt to escape arrest.

A Maitland man accused of kidnapping and viscously assaulting a woman to the point where she needed surgery allegedly rammed police in a stolen Landcruiser in an attempt to avoid arrest.

The 37-year-old man will face Newcastle Local Court on Sunday charged with domestic violence offences related to an alleged kidnapping and vicious assaults of a woman at Upper Allyn, which police started investigating in March.

Then on June 2, police were called to John Hunter Hospital, where a woman had gone with serious injuries requiring surgery.

Police said their investigations suggested the woman had been kidnapped by the 37-year-old man six weeks earlier and was held against her will.

About 5pm on June 3, police attempted to arrest the 37-year-old man but he allegedly assault officers and left the scene in a Jeep Cherokee towing a camper trailer.

Police tried to stop him on Kendall St, Bellbird, and began a chase which continued through Kulnura.

During the chase, the Jeep swerved to avoid road spikes and collided with a tree, causing the trailer to separate from the vehicle.

The chase was then called off for safety reasons soon afterwards.

Just before 5pm on June 23, an off-duty officer saw the man travelling in a Toyota Landcruiser, which was allegedly stolen, on the New England Highway in East Maitland.

The man was followed to the carpark of Metford Railway Station and approached by police.

Police will allege in court that the man then rammed two police vehicles, causing minor injuries to two officers, before rolling the Landcruiser.

The man was arrested and charged with 23 offences including: two counts of domestic violence related common assault, intimidation (domestic violence), detain person with intent to obtain advantage cause actual bodily harm (domestic violence), four counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (domestic violence), reckless grievous bodily harm (domestic violence), two counts of using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, two counts of resisting police, two counts of assaulting police in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, destroy or damage property, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, two counts of dishonestly obtain property by deception, aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence-armed, take and drive car without consent of owner, and driving dangerously.

Investigations are continuing.
