A Sunday morning sleep-in inside a car parked on one of Newcastle’s most exclusive streets has led a man to be charged with serious drug offences after curious police allegedly found cocaine and methamphetamine during a search of the vehicle.
Kenneth James Wells, 40, was slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle on Ocean St at Merewether when he got a tap on the window from a police officer about 9.30am on Sunday.
The street, which stretches around Dixon Park Surf Club and once housed big names like Andrew Johns and Nathan Tinkler as residents as well as having government housing backing onto it, is one of the city’s most exclusive thoroughfares.
After speaking with Wells, police decided to search the car.
Inside, they allegedly found 28 grams, or just over an ounce, of methylamphetamine and 21 grams of cocaine.
Police also allegedly seized a knife and a stolen number plate.
Wells was taken to Newcastle police station and charged with two counts of deemed supply of an indictable quantity of a prohibited drug, two counts of possessing a prohibited drug, and one count each of goods in custody suspected of being stolen, custody of a knife in a public place and unlawfully possessing a number plate.
He faced Newcastle Local Court on Monday where he was not required to enter any pleas and did not apply for bail.
Wells was due to reappear in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday.
