Jason Robert McAlister charged with drug and gun offences after police fire shot during raid at Gillieston Heights

Police allege an officer was forced to shoot at a drug dealer after he had confronted police with two hunting knives during a dawn raid in the Lower Hunter.

A review is underway after police shot at an alleged drug dealer who confronted officers with two hunting knives during a dawn raid.

Police have confirmed an officer fired one bullet from his gun as they swooped on the Gillieston Heights home about 6.25am on Tuesday.

No one was hit.

Police allege Jason Robert McAlister, 26, was armed with two “hunting style knives” when he confronted officers “prompting an officer to discharge their firearm”.

McAlister was arrested without further incident and taken to Maitland police station where he was charged with supplying a pistol to person unauthorised to possess, using etc offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence, using etc offensive weapon to prevent police investigation, supplying a commercial quantity of a prohibited drug and participating in a criminal group.

Police allege McAlister was part of a drug and firearm supply network stretching from Maitland to Sydney and which came under investigation by Strike Force Stranraer detectives.

A dozen people have been charged by the strike force, which was established in May last year, and remain before the courts.

McAlister faced Maitland Local Court on Tuesday where he was not required to enter any pleas, made no application for bail and was remanded in custody.

He will appear in Newcastle Local Court on June 19.

A review into the discharge of the firearm has commenced.

Investigations under Strike Force Stranraer continue.
