James Callahan death: Man, 33, arrested in Yeppoon, Queensland set to be interviewed by Hamilton murder investigators

Detectives investigating the alleged stabbing murder of a young man on a suburban street following a comment over littering are set to travel to Queensland following the dramatic arrest of a suspect at the centre of a manhunt.

Detectives investigating the brutal stabbing death of a popular Newcastle man over littering are set to travel interstate to speak with a suspect dramatically arrested following a huge manhunt in Queensland.

The man, aged in his 30s, was arrested on Sunday afternoon following an intense air and land search through the coastal town of Yeppoon.

Footage of him being taken into custody at Figtree Creek shows a swarm of police around the man after helicopters and a large amount of police resources had been used to hunt the suspect.

The man, who is believed to have also been wanted by Queensland police, was being sought for questioning over the alleged murder of James Callahan on a suburban Newcastle street earlier this month.

Police allege Mr Callahan, 22, had just finished work and was waiting for his order at a well-known late-night food store on Beaumont St, Hamilton when he chipped someone about littering on the street.

Strike Force Mannum detectives allege Mr Callahan was assaulted near the food court before being chased down Beaumont St where he was stabbed multiple times by at least two people.

Dramatic footage of the attack, too graphic to release in full, shows Mr Callahan being attacked by a group of people in a violent altercation that began on a footpath and spilled onto the road.

He was found collapsed on Beaumont St and despite the best efforts of police and paramedics, he could not be saved.

The day after the November 17 attack, two people were taken into custody in separate arrests.

North Lambton man Jason Talbot, 27, was arrested at Waratah Police Station at 11am and later charged with murder.

The 27-year-old building labourer remains in custody on remand after declining to make a release application when he faced Newcastle Local Court the following day.

Meanwhile, Alivia Muriel Briggs was arrested at a bus stop in Bankstown just after 5pm.

The 33-year-old was also been charged with murder and did not enter a plea when her case was briefly mentioned in Bankstown Local Court last week.

Following another week of intense investigations, Queensland police took the 33-year-old man into custody.

“Detectives investigating the stabbing death of a man in Hamilton two weeks ago are working with Queensland Police after a 33-year-old man was arrested in Yeppoon, Queensland on Sunday 24 November 2024,” NSW Police said in a brief statement on Monday.

It is understood that will include detectives travelling to Queensland to speak with the man, who had been wanted for questioning over the death of Mr Callahan.

The arrest came just hours before a vigil was held by Mr Callahan’s family and friends at Stockton breakwall to remember the popular young man and avid fisherman.
