A Merewether teenager who was dramatically arrested over the alleged random sexual assault of a woman on a popular Newcastle night strip has been granted strict bail.

A Merewether teenager charged over an alleged violent sexual assault near one of the city’s most popular nightclubs has been granted strict conditional bail, including that an acceptable person agree to provide a $10,000 surety if he fails to comply.
Jack Milner, 19, will also have to remain inside his parents’ Merewether Heights home unless he is accompanied by his mother or father or he needed to go to a medical or legal appointment, work or court.
The teenager was arrested by Strike Force Molyneaux detectives during a raid and search warrant on the Merewether Heights home on Saturday as part of their investigations into the alleged rape on November 25.
Police said emergency services were called to Finnegans Hotel on Darby St, Newcastle, about 11.50pm on that Friday night following reports a woman had been sexually assaulted by a man.
A crime scene was established and forensically examined by experts.
Strike Force Molyneaux was formed by Newcastle City detectives and investigators from the sex crimes squad before the arrest on Saturday.
Milner was charged with aggravated sexual assault – inflict actual bodily harm and intentionally choke a person without consent.
He faced Newcastle Local Court on Monday where he successfully applied for his release. He has not been required to enter a plea.
Magistrate John Chicken imposed a list of conditions on his release, including that he report daily to police, surrender his passport and not go near any international airports.
Mr Chicken also ordered Milner to remain at his parents home unless in the company of one of his parents except for medical treatment, legal conferences, reporting on bail or work.
Milner has also been banned from drinking alcohol or going into any premises where alcohol is sold, including hotels, clubs and licensed restaurants.
Milner will reappear in court in February.
