Human remains found at a Newcastle beach have been identified as a man who was reported missing after getting into difficulty in the water late last year.
A bone was located by a man on the shoreline at Stockton Beach on August 26 before being reported to Newcastle Police.
Forensic testing revealed the remains were that of a 20-year-old man reported missing on November 26.
Five swimmers got into trouble in a rip at about 3pm that day in an area of Stockton Beach near Lavis Lane, with four of the swimmers managing to break free of the rip while one man remained missing.
The area where the swimmers got into difficulty was not patrolled.
It prompted a large air, sea and land search off Stockton Bight for several days to locate the young man from Western Sydney but he was never to be seen again.
His death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
