Highway patrol nab motorcyclist for 112kmh wheelie at Wickham
Police allege the rider was travelling along a suburban Newcastle road when he sped up to 112kmh and performed a “wheelie” directly in front of an unmarked highway patrol car.

A provisional motorcyclist has been stung nearly $4000 in fines, been suspended from riding for six months and handed 18 demerit points after allegedly performing a “wheelie” at 112kmh in a 60kmh zone – all in front of an unmarked police car.
Police said the 31-year-old was travelling south along Hannell St at Wickham, in suburban Newcastle, on Sunday afternoon with an unmarked highway patrol vehicle travelling behind him.
“ The male rider increased his speed in a signposted 60 area and his speed was checked at 112 km/h. At the time of the speed check the rider was performing a ‘wheelie’,” police said in a social media post.
The rider was stopped and produced a Class R -provisional P1 licence.
Police said the rider was “not displaying a ‘P’ plate as required and a subsequent check of the motorcycle, a BMW S1000RR revealed that it was a prohibited cycle for the novice rider”.
He was issued traffic infringement notices totalling $3983 and was suspended for 6 months. Further suspensions will follow for the 18 demerit points accumulated.
Meanwhile, Newcastle highway patrol have charged another motorcyclist after he was allegedly riding his machine over the alcohol limit and with a pillion passenger not wearing a helmet.
Police said they stopped the Shortland man, 29, as he was on his way to the Newcastle 500 Supercars race on Saturday morning after seeing his passenger was not wearing a helmet.
“He produced a NSW Rider Provisional P1 licence and was subjected to a breath test,” police said.
“Due to a positive reading he was arrested and a subsequent breath analysis returned a reading of 0.030.
“ He was charged with Special Range PCA 2nd and subsequent offence and issued traffic infringement notices amounting to $1610 with 15 demerit points.
“At the time the rider was also found to be riding a prohibited motorcycle and not displaying ‘P’ plate as required. His licence was suspended for three months for the alcohol offence.”
The pillion passenger was issued an infringement notice for $362.
