Fire investigators will try to determine the cause of a ferocious fire that ripped through a home in Belmont on Monday night.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to the blaze at around 6.20pm on Earnest St where the premises was fully engulfed in flames.

Onlookers watched on as five fire crews of around 20 firefighters tried to contain the fireball which has erupted at the single level “cottage” and protect a neighbouring home.

The unoccupied property was “severely damaged” by the blaze as investigators now try to piece together how it all started.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said there was talk that a squatter may have been inside the home at the time the fire started, but nothing was found after the blaze had been contained.

There were no other injuries following the fire and the site has been “handed over to police”.

Crews remain at the address as they continue to mop up.
