A man has died, and a Tighes Hill man has faced court, after a car veered off the road, ejecting the passenger and splitting the car in half.

A man has died after being ejected from a car which collided into a power pole in Newcastle.

Emergency services were called to Maitland Rd, near Henry St, at Tighes Hill, just after 11pm Sunday following reports a car had veered off the road and collided with a power pole.

Initial inquiries suggest the car was travelling east on Maitland Rd when it left the roadway and collided with a power pole, splitting it in half.

A male passenger, who is yet to be formally identified, was ejected from the car’s seat. He died at the scene of the crash.

The driver, aged 31, freed himself from the wreckage and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The man, Surinder Singh, has since been arrested and charged with dangerous driving and negligent driving occasioning death and was refused bail.

Mr Singh briefly appeared before Newcastle Local Court on Monday via audio visual link where his lawyer did not make an application for bail.

Magistrate Caleb Franklin adjourned the matter until January 19, 2023.
