Police have allegedly uncovered significant amounts of MDMA, methamphetamine, magic mushrooms and a pill press after a random late-night car stop in a quiet surf club carpark.
Lake Macquarie highway patrol officers said they decided to conduct a roadside alcohol and drug test on the driver of a silver-coloured Toyota C-HR SUV in the carpark of Blacksmiths Surf Club just after 11.30pm on Good Friday.
They allege the male driver, 34, failed a roadside drug test before two MDMA capsules were found on him.
Police also allege the man, Zachary James Barker, attempted to run away before he was found hiding under a nearby parked car.
Barker was taken to John Hunter Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries as well as providing a blood sample.
Police allege a search of the Toyota uncovered two resealable bags containing a total of 7.62g of cocaine, weighing scales and a cutting agent.
The following morning, detectives conducted a search warrant on Barker’s home in Lake Macquarie.
During the raid, police allegedly seized 287.2g of MDMA, 69.2g of meth, 30.08g of magic mushrooms, 3.596kg of cannabis and 36 diazepam tablets.
They also allegedly located a large pill press and 1500 cannabis seeds.
Barker was released from hospital and taken to Belmont police station where he was charged with 16 offences including six counts of possessing a prohibited drug, three counts of supplying an indictable quantity of a prohibited drug and two counts of supplying a commercial quantity of a prohibited drug.
He is also facing one count each of possessing a tablet press or drug encapsulator, possessing a prescribed restricted substance, escaping police custody, assaulting a police officer in the execution of their duty, and hindering or resisting police officer in the execution of their duty.
Barker faced Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday where he was not required to enter any pleas and was refused bail.
He will appear in Newcastle Local Court on June 18.
Investigations by Lake Macquarie detectives are continuing.
