A teenager wanted for questioning over the horror crash in suburban Newcastle which killed a woman and an unborn child has been arrested.
The 19-year-old was taken into custody in Mayfield on Tuesday afternoon and driven to Waratah police station where he will be questioned over the crash early on Sunday morning.
Police had been looking for the teen since a Holden sedan and a Hyundai crashed head-on on Newcastle Rd at North Lambton about 2.40am.
A female passenger of the Hyundai, a 55-year-old who had only arrived in Australia three days earlier, died at the scene.
The driver, a 28-year-old female relative who was 25 weeks pregnant, suffered serious injuries. Tragically, her unborn baby could not be saved.
Two teenage passengers in the back seat of the Holden were listed on Sunday as being in a critical condition in the John Hunter Hospital.
One was suffering suspected spinal injuries, while the other was in an induced coma.
Police said on Tuesday that both remained in hospital in serious conditions.
The teenage male driver of the Holden allegedly left the scene along with a front seat passenger.
Police announced on Sunday that a critical incident investigation had been established to investigate the crash after police had seen the Holden allegedly being driven dangerously a short time before the collision.
Strike Force Carrarang investigators, along with Operation Utah officers, took the teenager into custody about 3.15pm on Wednesday.
More to come.
