Police are investigating whether an ongoing dispute over a car was at the centre of a shooting which left one man in hospital with a neck wound and a second man facing charges including shoot with intent to murder.

Newcastle City detectives established Strike Force Fontanta shortly after a 36-year-old man walked into the Mater Hospital in Waratah, a western suburb of Newcastle, about 5am on Monday with a gunshot wound to his neck.

The man was rushed to nearby John Hunter Hospital for treatment and was later reported to be in a stable condition.

The investigation led investigators to establish a crime scene at a Waratah West home later on Friday before 21-year-old Angus Osborne was taken into custody on Minmi Rd at Maryland – about seven kilometres away – after a vehicle stop.

Police allegedly seized a loaded firearm, ammunition and other items during a search of the car.

The items were sent away for further forensic testing.

Osborne was taken to Newcastle police station where he was charged with shoot at with intent to murder, possess a shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority, possess or use a prohibited weapon without a permit, possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority and use, supply, acquire, possess a stolen firearm or part.

He was refused police bail and faced Parramatta Local Court on Sunday, where he was not required to enter a plea and did not make a release application.

Magistrate Les Brennan formally remanded Osborne in custody to appear in Newcastle Local Court on March 19.
