Catching a freebie concert has been described as a classic Aussie thing to do and that’s been the case in Newcastle following the recent Elton John concerts. Check out the video.

Elton fans catch a freebie Elton John concert in Newcastle

There’s no doubt Aussies love a good freebie and it seems catching your favourite concert, without the cost of actually paying for the ticket, has become a thing.

That was certainly the case in Newcastle this week when legend Elton John came to town, after a number of devoted fans were devastated when tickets were sold out or just too expensive, some costing hundreds of dollars.

A crowd of revellers gathered on the side of the road outside McDonald Jones Stadium, as they sung and danced to all the Elton tunes for free, some standing on car roofs and ‘trays’ to get a better view, others bringing along a picnic blanket and chairs to enjoy the concert.

One Novocastrian who joined in on the fun filmed the turnout and posted it to Tiktok, which has since notched up more than 30 thousand views.

“You could see the screens of the whole concert from the side of the road and hear it clearly,” local Lauren Mulholland said.

“A nice couple allowed us to jump on their tray, where they had the set lists of the concert and offered us chocolates they brought. The atmosphere was amazing.

“Typical Newcastle locals getting around the concert and joining in on the fun.”

The video shows cars slowly driving past and some parking in the median strip to stop and listen, while trucks went past honking as hoards of fans stood staring at the big screen from a distance.

“There were ladies enjoying the show with a glass of wine and kids ranging from all ages there to watch,” Ms Mulholland said.

“The concert was really loud and I think people in surrounding areas had decided to come down and watch and people driving past would have seen and walked down like us.

“Obviously word spread because by the end of the night it was packed to the brim.”

The post also attracted hundreds of comments applauding the creative way to see the pop rock king, Sir Elton.

“Didn’t need to pay $300 for a great show,” one said.

“Necessity breeds invention,” commented another.

“This is gold. Newy for the win,” one person said.

“Never been more prouder to be a Novocastrian to see this,” a local added.

“Ahah my roof is still dinted, worth it,” one reveller said.

But it seems it’s not an unusual thing for a lot of Aussies to do, with many commenting they’ve done the same thing at other concerts across the country, saying it’s “classic Australian style” to catch a freebie, citing it’s just “resourceful”.

“Did the same in Adelaide, sat outside the venue with my boys,” one person said.

“We did the same thing in Bathurst when he came here,” another explained.

“Did this with Bliss N Eso back in like 2018 or 19 on the Goldie at Surfers,” one person added.

“I did this for Adele in Sydney, could even see her through the gates,” another said.

“I’ve done this with Kings of Leon and Midnight Oil. Memories I’ll cherish forever,” one woman commented.

“Willie Nelson is coming here in two weeks and imma (sic) do the same thing on top of a brewery that isn’t open yet and I got permission,” one man also added.

It’s been put down as typical Novocastrian camaraderie.

“It was great to see the community get together especially after Covid. It made me love Newcastle more,” Ms Mulholland said.
