A Port Stephens couple has denied an alleged screwdriver attack on a man at Nelson Bay in March last year and will head to trial.

Port Stephens-Hunter Police were called to a home on Shoal Bay Rd in the early hours of March 13, after reports a 41-year-old man had been attacked during a street brawl on Donald St.

Police allege the victim suffered multiple wounds after being stabbed with a screwdriver in the back at around 1.30am.

He was treated by paramedics before being rushed to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition, after he suffered collapsed lungs as well as bruising and lacerations to his head.

A street search by police uncovered a number of items that were seized by officers, before a crime scene was established for forensic examination.
