FERRY commuters will be able to use Meadowbank Wharf again on Thursday following improvement works.

The new structure will see commuters walk along a gangway from the former wharf to a new floating pontoon.

The new layout will provide more protection from the weather, improved safety and seating, and better access for people with disabilities.

The first ferry to stop at the wharf on Thursday will be a 6.03am service, travelling to Darling Harbour.

Transport for NSW said in order to minimise the time the wharf is closed, temporary bus stops there will remain. New bus shelters will be installed in June.

The wharf has been closed since May 5.

The works are part of transport improvements along the Parramatta River which have included new ferries and extra services.
