OUR high-achieving hammer thrower Alex Hulley has nailed her spot in the Australian team for the 2013 IAAF World Youth Athletics Championships in Ukraine, with a record-breaking throw in Perth.
The 2012 Rouse Hill Times Junior Sports Star only needed to win her event at the recent Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Perth to qualify, after posting five qualifying distances for the world titles.
Alex, the Australian All-Schools champion, ended the competition with her record heave of 56.33m.
Her achievement is more stunning because she was competing in the tougher under-18 category even though she is only 15.
"I am relieved and excited to have finalised my selection for the Australian team to compete in the World Championships," Alex said.
"I just hope to throw my best over there and try to qualify for the final, it's going to be such a great experience and I can't wait. Three of my training buddies will also be on the team.
"I went into the comp feeling a bit nervous and wasn't really all that pleased with my series of throws.
" In the end though I did enough to win with a throw of 56.33m. Three of my throwing training buddies are also on the team so I'm sure we will have a great time travelling and supporting each other," she said.
The Rouse Hills teenager will resume training next month after a fortnight off.
Alex is our first nomination for the 2013 NewsLocal Junior Sports Star competition.
