The rest of the competition may have been surprised by his team’s result in round one but not this Sydney Rugby Union 1st Colts coach.

Southern Districts pulled off the surprise of the opening round when they took on and took down defending champions Eastern Suburbs

Souths defeated Easts 31-25 but coach Jake Holman wasn’t at all surprised at his teams effort.

And he’s forecasting a few more big moments from his “special’ team this season.

“I wouldn’t say surprised. We prepared well for the season,’’ he said on the win at Woollahra Oval.

“We caught them by surprise but our defence was outstanding. We just put it out there.

“The main things that was impressive was our effort.

“WE worked really hard for each other and that made a platform for our attack.

Holman said many players from second and third colts have been elevated into firsts this year.

“These guys have old schools Souths DNA,’’ he said.

“They are hungry and don’t stop working and fight really hard for each other.

“It’s impressive to see. They just never stop working. You can;t coach that.’’

NSW Waratahs selectors target Sydney Rugby Union 1st Colts 2025 season to find next gen stars

In round two Southern Districts will take Eastwood at Forshaw Rugby Park on Saturday at 3pm.

Souths weren’t the only team to raise eyebrows in round one with Warringah taking a four point win over the Hunter Wildfires but the Newcastle side still impressing at home.

“They were good,’’ said Sydney Uni coach Stubbs.

The Wildfires head to Sydney to play Easts this weekend.

One of the highlights of the round will be the clash between the highly fancied Sydney University and old rivals Randwick at St Andrews College at 11.30am.

Both come into the match off big round one wins and with plenty of fire in the belly.

“It will be a ripper,’’ said coach Mike Stubbs.

“It’s always a good game against them, especially in Colts.’’

Randwick coach Jack Harrison is also expecting a big match from his young side in the wake of a big win in the opening round.

“We always pride ourselves on going toe-to-toe with Uni,’’ he said..

“But it’s not been a happy hunting ground for us. I can’t tell you the last time we won there.’’

In other matches on Saturday, Manly will be looking for their second win against the Two Blues, Warringah their second against West Harbour and Gordon their second against Northern Suburbs.
