Zameer Adil Ali: Mt Pritchard man convicted of domestic violence, theft, after assaulting, robbing ex-partner

A man has been jailed after he attacked and robbed his former partner after she won on the pokies, due to his belief he was entited to her winnings.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

A courier driver has learnt his fate after attacking and robbing his ex-partner of her pokie winnings after a night out, before breaking a condition of an apprehended violence order (AVO) to not to go near her again.

Zameer Adil Ali, 36, of Mt Pritchard, appeared before Bankstown Local Court on Tuesday which heard he believed he was entitled to the $3000 his former partner won playing the machines at Bankstown Sports in the early hours of June 25.

After the win, the duo left the club, returning to the woman’s home in Bass Hill, before driving to a phone repair store around 4pm.

While driving back to the home once more, Ali started an argument with his partner, demanding money, before trying to take her mobile phone by force, agreed facts tendered to the court state.

While the woman managed to keep her phone, Ali reached into her purse and took a fistful of cash, later counted to be $405.

When they arrived back at her home she shouted at Ali to leave her alone and give her space before screaming out to her landlord to call the police.

Ali then pushed her down on the bed, covering her mouth with her hands, attempting to silence her, before fleeing the scene in his car.

Police arrived shortly after and took a statement from the woman, and an AVO was taken out on Ali, who was charged with assault — domestic violence related — and stealing from a person.

Just under a month later police pulled over Ali for a random breath test — which came up negative — but found him in the car with his former partner and arrested him for breaking a condition of his AVO.

He was also drug tested, which came up positive for methamphetamine.

In court, Ali’s lawyer said his client acknowledged his issues with aggression and drug use and said the Mt Pritchard man was ashamed of his actions.

Magistrate Glenn Walsh told the court he was not confident in Ali’s prospects of rehabilitation, noting his record of six offences of assault in a domestic violence setting, for which he had received a “extremely lenient sentence” for.

“It’s what he’s done in the past, his recent past, which tells what would really happen with rehabilitation,” Mr Walsh said.

Noting the letter from Ali’s father calling him loving, caring, and hardworking, Mr Walsh again pointed out his number of convictions for assaults.

Ali was sentenced to 15 months in prison, with a non-parole period of nine months, backdated to his arrest on July 22.

He will be eligible for release on April 21, 2023.
